Strange Posts

« posted: 2 years ago »
We've been getting some strange posts to the forum and I'm not quite sure what I'm seeing. They're primarily by new users, and they don't make a lot of sense contextually. Some have poor english, but the most recent wave has correct english but make no sense in context. I thought perhaps what was happening was a pre-spam attack - many websites moderate the first few posts by new users, so often times spammers will get around this by fake but earnest sounding posts initially, then start spamming. But these have never happened.

It could be the start of an attack on the site (checking for vulnerabilities in the posting function), or it could be bots gone awry.

I just wanted to let you all know that this is happening, should you see one of these weird posts. Now that I noticed a pattern, I'm deleting them as soon as I see them.

Yup, those posts are quarantined for now and that user banned. I've been trying to understand the purpose of those posts but I don't really know. Some discussion suggest it could be intruders looking for backdoors into software, others say forum spam, but most forum spam contains URLs and these don't... SO I don't know what to think. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a problem.

Maybe they  are hoping someone will contact them via PM where they can link  to a site to infect you?

Kind Regards,

Tim
