Opinions wanted: Recent Posts Usefulness?

« posted: 4 years ago »
I was looking at the pages for Recent Posts and was wondering if any of you use it? The link is in the header, which I've outlined here:

The page itself seems confusing to me. It's different than other forum software for one. But also recognizing where to reply and what the conversation is. At least for me. One problem is that the reply buttons look like they're for different topics than they are. For comparison, a screen shot of the page:

And of the correct areas highlighted:

I'm wondering if I should clean it up a bit, or if it's not very useful, change the page so it's more like the recent topics on the index page:

If you're using that page, do you like it, or do you have trouble with it?

If your're not using it, is it because it's not useful to you or you just haven't used that link? Do you use other forums and if so, do you use some sort of "recent posts" type page?

Any and all feedback appreciated, even negative! Especially negative, if you don't like something, please feel free to share.

I use this every time I come on to the forum.  The one I don't use is New Replies because I *think*, that New Replies would come under recent posts anyway.

Is there a difference between Recent Posts here and New Posts on other forums?

I've been involved in similar discussions on other forums and it surprises me how many people don't use the "New Posts" feature and just go to the forum that they like and select threads that way.

I personally like using recent posts as a way to get into the forum.  I am a board member on a local fish club in which I share duties of being a forum cop.  I always use the tab of "new posts" to look at and peruse the forum.

I see the recently updated topics and with the amount of traffic here, that shows me all I need to know for now at least until traffic gets a lot heavier and recent topics doesn't include everything since I last logged on.

New Replies are replies to topics that you've engaged in but haven't read since someone new replied.

Recent Posts are all the recent posts, including new topics and new replies, and isn't limited to just topics you've participated in. So yes, it would also contain new replies.

Being that you use it, is there anything you think could make it better? Anything you don't like about it, or that you think would make it easier to use? I'm not necessarily thinking of getting rid of it, just changing the format and I'm trying to decide if a major overhaul would be better, or if just tweaking it a bit would help.

I see the recently updated topics and with the amount of traffic here, that shows me all I need to know for now at least until traffic gets a lot heavier and recent topics doesn't include everything since I last logged on.

I'm not sure what you mean, just that the site isn't active enough to be useful, or is it that it's not active enough for that page to be useful?

I've been checking out the recent posts page and No, I don't like the way it is. I only want the link to the thread, not the whole thread posted and have to scroll through a lot to get to what I may want.
On my other forums, most use cookies to give me all posts since my last visit.

I like seeing the Recently Updated Topics.  That is useful as it allows you to quickly look back at the context of the conversation.  The posts by themselves I don't find very useful.

  Hi Tami,

I only saw the recently posted last week,i think that because as soon as you log on and go to forums you can see right away whats new.

Not sure if other do the same or if they use Recent Post.

Yeah, it's a little confusing because it shows the 6 most recent posts, not all of them. I think I need to change it, I just need more time and healthier wrists! I'm thinking of going with the format that is on the home page, and on the home page adding a link that is something like "View all recent posts."
