My cat passed

« posted: 3 years ago »
Ug, this probably isn't the best place for this, but I'm distraught and everyone here has been so wonderful.

I had to put down my cat this morning.. He was 19 years old, and frail and had pretty much every disease imaginable, but somehow kept on trucking. About 3 weeks ago, he had two teeth removed, and the vet noticed some swelling that appeared to be an abscess under the teeth. We were sent on our way with anitibiotics. He had some minor swelling, and the antibiotics didn't work. We took him back this morning, expecting that he'd end up having to have the abscess drained. Of course, it turned out that it wasn't an abscess, but a really aggressive tumor.

The vet said the only thing we could do with a tumor like that and his age was treat with pain killers, but the tumor was a type she's seen break jaws. So the choice was an easy one. But it still stings a lot.

I got him when I was 18 or 19 years old, I don't exactly remember. He was my first cat - my parents never allowed me my own cat, so of course that was the first thing I did. He was a bastard at times, but loved me. He slept almost every night with his head tangled in my hair. If I lay facing the wrong way, he'd punch me in the eye until I rolled over (such an asshole.) But I loved that ridiculous cat, and even though the last 5 years he seemed to be living on borrowed time, it still didn't prepare me for how terrible I felt today.

Here are a few pictures of him:

Tami,

So sorry for your loss.  We lost our "first generation" of kitties over an 18 month period, it was very hard.  We now have two more that are about 10 years old.  As mischievous as they can be sometimes, can't imagine not having them around!

Tami, I'm so very sorry and i know just how up set you must be,we have to have our dog put to sleep soon(just can't find the right day to do it).

He's twelve years old blind and deaf and has trouble walking,we still take him for a short walk and the vet ask's if he's eating and drinking ok,but we know we don't have much more time with him..

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your thoughts. I was out of town for a few days, and it was chaotic and I didn't think about this for a few days. Then I got home and realized he wasn't there and it sort of hit me all new again. He was a good boy and it's hard to think he's gone.
