Some sad news :-(

« posted: 11 months ago »
Well I am very sad to say that my male seahorse Adam died of gas bubble disease.  It is especially sad because I believe a bad decision on my part brought on the GBD.  About 2 weeks ago I moved my clownfish, Baby into the seahorse tank.  Since the seahorse tank was low on sand from me syphoning it, I added the sand from Baby's tank too.  I should have rinsed that sand well in salt water but I did not.  The sand had more detritus and gunk in it than I thought.  I am sharing this so that none of you make the mistake that I made.  It is a very painful lesson and I am so sad.

Thanks SaltyinNJ and Tami for the condolenses.  I still feel so bad about Adam but it reinforces to me how quickly a healthy seahorse can go to being a sick seahorse if tank conditions are not kept up to par.  October 2nd would have marked 2 years that I had Adam and will mark 2 years that I have had Eve and my pipefish, but in many ways I am still a newbie.

Oh no!!!! vlangel I am so sorry to hear this!!! When I lost Half Moon I was devastated, I had had ~3 years.  And I am not even sure of the cause, she just seemed to have a swim bladder problem.... thank you for sharing your cause so we can all learn and double think any changes we make to our tanks.  Was this a rapid disease?? I never even saw that you posted he was sick!

Thanks Laurasea.  I had not posted that he got sick.  We were hosting company when it happened plus we were also in the midst of getting new carpet in our livingroom/diningroom area when it happened.  Between taking care of Adam and my other obligations I just never got to posting it.  He came down with a buoyancy issue right after I added the sand, which is why I think that was the cause.  Then he developed popeye.  I did not have diamox on hand and with everything going on at the time I did not have opportunity to try and get some.  I did put him in QT with freshly made salt water every day as I read Dan from Seahorse Source says that sometimes works.  It did not in Adam's case.  Toward the end I tried antibiotic treatment but I did not expect it to help and it did not.  He died after 8 days.

Eve never seemed affected at all.  The skimmers pulled out a lot of gunk the first 2-3 days after I added the sand and I did even more water changes than normal.  The damage was done by then I guess.  Eve does not even seem to be grieving so I am going to leave things be for now to make sure the tank is safe and healthy.

So sorry to hear about your loss, vlangel  :'( losing a seahorse is always difficult. I certainly can empathize with that. I hope that you're able to learn from your mistake and do even better next time! And good luck in the future  :)

Thank you Sue.  Yes, you are right, we just keep learning to strive to be better care takers of our pets.

Losing any fish hurts but seahorses have such personalities that they are especially painful.  I guess it is those special personalities that capture our hearts and why we go to greater lengths to keep them.  I have learned a little more about the fragile balance of keeping them healthy.

Thank you Knap.  It was really sad, especially since I believe a poor decision on my part brought about Adam's condition.

I really felt heartbroken for you and your family.  Losing your juveniles and adult seahorses must have been devastating.
