Renegade roommate!

« posted: 9 months ago »
My seahorses have been sharing their tank with a 4 year old royal gramma for the last year and a half.  He was always a peaceful fish and I liked that he ate mysis that the ponies wasted.  However a few days ago I thought maybe I saw some aggression from him.  Since I didn't see it well I gave him the benefit of the doubt.  However today he definitely snapped at Eve.  That is not acceptable so now he finds himself in the feeder shrimp tank until he can be rehomed.  I guess you just never know.

Awe sorry to hear he / she changed after all of that time.  I try to stick with firefish,  small gobies,  safe blennies, and Mandarins in my SH tanks.  No more lawnmower algae blennies though.  One chomped on one of my previous seahorses. I am sure he was just trying to clean the algae off his back, but he went to the reef tank after that.  ???

I would have loved a mandarin but my tank is bb.  What do you think of a bangaii cardinal?  I think my lfs can get captive bred.

I have had them in the past and they are easy to keep and are nocturnal.  They were aways one of the most peaceful of my reef fish.  The only thing I know that they did was they would gobble up my clownfish fry as quick as they would hatch.
I can not sex them either but it would be great to have a male and a female.

I guess we have to wait for Divers Den to have mated pairs....I was looking at them yet again yesterday at the LFS...they all look the same!  Grrrr     I would love to have a pair in the 60g cube once it is ready.  The stock list 1-2 pr seahorses, mandarin, 1 pr Cardinals, and cleaners.

I looked at my son's Cardinal and I could not see any bumps.  And his Cardinal is fat so I do not think that is the issue.

So you may be right about Diver's Den.

I saw your ponies arrived!  Thats very coo and they look greatl.  Are you hoping the male is pregnant?  I am sure you are anxious to get the 60 cube cycled and ready.  Sounds like you have a good plan.

Your system is very similar to mine in size/volume.

You can sex mandarin dragonets by their dorsal fin. The males have a elongated dorsal fin that comes to a point. The females keep the shorter rounded dorsal similar to juveniles. Females tend to be much harder to come by and are easily confused with juveniles.

Thanks Cheryl.  Can you keep a mandarin in a bare bottom tank?

Yes you can if they have rock work to hide in. You can even hide a piece of PVC pipe for them to jump into. The biggest hurdle to keeping mandarins is they require a large amount of live food. The people I know that have kept them long term and have produced fry have large fuges in their sumps for amphipod and copepod production. At one time ORA was selling CB mandarins that were already eating frozen, unfortunately they have discontinued production.

I only ever had 1 mandarin and it was in a well eastablished 90 gallon.  Unfortunately it wasted away.  I have read threads on training them onto frozen but it did not sound like every mandarin is trainable and I really don't want to see another one waste away.  I am successfully keeping an amphipod culture going but I am guessing that a mandarin could only eat the small ones.  I really love them but this is sounding like its too iffy.  I will probably stick with getting a CB bangaii cardinal instead.
