While wandering the interwebs, I found some baby Banded Pipefish (Dunckerocampus da
I just had to share, they are insanely cute:

  • H. erectus, H. comes, H. kuda, H. zosterae, Doryrhamphus excisus, Bryx dunckeri, Corythoichthys flavofasciatus
It's all about the snick!

They are cute yet strange looking at the same time. Thanks for sharing those photos. I've never seen a fish like that before. They are very cool looking animals.

I don't! They were actually photographed in the wild. Which means the guy that photographed them is one hell of a photographer/diver to spot them!

Yes, sometimes I just browse flickr for the hell of it to look at seahorse and pipefish pictures.  :-[

These are another on the long list of species I'd like to breed. A friend of mine had some luck at the Georgia aquarium raising them.

They have the same coloring as my CB adult pipefish, but their heads are a lot bigger.  I didn't know if young pipefish are like young seahorses with oversized heads?

I bet that's the case too. I asked my friend who raised them how old she felt they were. She said she suspected several weeks old. I'm guessing this is probably shortly after the "settle", as when they are born, they're much more like other marine fish than seahorses in that they have a larval stage where they don't really look much like the adults at all. They're clear and live among the plankton.
