Vague trouble

« posted: 1 year ago »
My large female erectus has been hitching at the top of the tank for a week.  At first I thought she was just trying something new.  But she is normally a food hog, and she has not been coming down to feed she has no sign of illness that I can see.  Prior to this she was trying all sorts of antics to get the attention of my male seahorse (but he has given his heart to another) . The three other seahorses are fine. Also I had some super saturation, problem with skimmer.   I am worried this may be a swim bladder issue. I don't know what to do.   Last night I tried to feed her and she was excited to eat as long as she didn't have to move from her perch at the top of the tank.   I just tried to move her and she can't stay low, she tried.
Never mind!! After manually lowering her twice, and trying to figure out what to do, she was able to swim lower and hitch at her normal spot.   And is now courting with the male! Ftf?? I swear she didn't move or eat for a week!!!! Last night fed her at the hitch.  Today lowered her manually in the tank. Wrote to you all then everything fine?!
?What do you think the problem is?

Ok wait she still can't lower her head into the food bowl, keeps trying.   Like I've mentioned before she is a fatty and loves her food. She can only swim horizontally instead of vertical.  So something is going on, but might be start resolve on own.  Thoughts?

Hello? She is still having trouble..  I am not sure what to do about it.  She stays at the top of the tank, and eats if I put mysis in front of her

I wish I COULD help but unfortunately the malady is not familiar to me as you mention no swelling or bloating.
I guess if it was mine, at this point I'd be treating in a hospital tank with Furan II, and if that didn't work after a full treatment I'd suspect internal chemistry problem and treat with Diamox.

Thanks Rayjay. 😢 she is one of my favorites.. She is of unknown age I've had her close to three years, but she was wild caught as an adult.  It seems to be a swim bladder issue...???? No external signs of disease, and she is eating, but can't swim normal and stays hitched at top ok tank.....or she could be egg bound I guess.  They were all courting pretty heavy before this happened😢😢

I had a similar issue with a wild-caught erectus, but she was brought up in a trawl net and showed similar signs almost immediately after going into a tank. My best guess at the time was that the trawl caused some sort of internal injuries. They slowly resolved on their own, but she was never fully healthy and didn't live very long (about 6 months after getting her) But like I said, I saw this happen immediately, so I don't think its the same issue as you're seeing since you have had yours for 3 years.

I know this wasn't extremely helpful, but I hope your girl feels better soon!!

Feelings of hope help.  She is still eating so that is good. Otherwise all the same top of tank not moving.

No :(   but she has improved very slightly, still at top of tank, but can swim a tiny bit better.   Or maybe I am wishing... still eating, tho less because I have to hold it just right in front of her..

My vet gave me a script for diamox when I explained that I had seahorses.  I haver never used it and now would probably need to get a more current script should I need diamox.  I bet most vets if you have been using them for other pets for a number of years would be willing to write a script.

Am going to have to get the meds.  She hasn't improved.  Still eating but staying at top of tank can't swim.  Still no sign of any disease, no other horses sick 😯😦

Today I had to euthanize Half Moon my lovely big girl.  She never recovered......she continued to eat, but she was at the top of the tank and started to not be able to keep her head under water, she would hitch that high.  Never any sign of disease. Until two days ago all the skin that was above the water got a secondary skin infection from being exposed to air.   Very sad, she was so lovely I have no idea of her age but I had her for around three years.

Sorry to hear the bad news.
Most of us have gone through those times, and many of us repeatedly over the years.
I can tell you first hand it never gets any easier 10-12 yrs down the road.

Thank you, I wish I could have understood the problem.  I thought of doing a necropsy, I am a veterinary technician and have performed many on animals.  But I couldn't bring myself to with Half Moon. 😢😢😢
