Please help establish a marine reserve in the Chagos Islands by signing the petition linked below. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference. We are trying to reach 10000 signatures - please sign here:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/271759692

Deadline is February 12, 2010 so you must act fast!

The Chagos Islands are the richest marine ecosystem under UK jurisdiction. The islands are rich with nesting seabirds and turtles, and are surrounded by some of the cleanest seas in the world, with extensive coral reefs in remarkably good condition.

Along - there is no point in signing this petition now because the marine reserve has been created.

However, before you say "good news" please be aware that it is widely believed that the UK government took this step for all the wrong reasons.

It gives them yet another excuse to NOT right the wrong that was done to the people of the Chagos Islands who were wrongfully expelled from their homes, and deported to Mauritius, to make way for a US military base.

Pellegrina, do you have any links to back up that assertion? I haven't heard anything of that sort, but it would be really terrible to find out that such a conservation effort is being subverted for political gains.

There is the Monitor Marine Sanctuary in North Carolina. It's more of a memorial to the U.S.S. monitor which sunk during the civil war, but it is also considered an artificial reef, and has been colonized by many different fish and corals.
