Baby Erectus born on Father's Day :)

« posted: 2 years ago »
I received the babies from Ann Marie on Fathers Day. Its day 11 and I have 43 left. I probably lost about 13-15 so the total estimated number of this batch is around 55-60.

I've raised erectus years and years ago with some limited success and recently tried a few batches of reidi. But due to having 2 jobs I wasn't really able to get them very far. My second job finished on Fathers Day actually, so this to me was a sign from the universe that this batch was going to work out :)

They are in a 5 gallon bucket with some hold fast with a ridgit airline that is just strong enough to keep the water moving. I add live phyto (Currently T. Iso) to the water to help with any ammonia that may build up in the nursery water. I've read that this helps the fry see food that is actually within reach versus being tempted by something further away. Also, it'll keep bbs fed and enriched if they happen to dodge being eaten. I will completely empty out the nursery and clean out the bucket every couple of days.

I feed out 1-2 day old bbs enriched with live T. Iso (that I culture) and also a bit of naturose, which is Astaxanthin. I usually feed about 2 times a day, 3 times every now and then if their stomachs clear out. They have been rather robust and much more easy to care for than reidi (knock on wood). I have used algamac exclusively before with the reidi, but it tends to foul the water quickly during early spring when I had the reidi (I don't have air conditioning in my apartment) if I didn't change the enrichment water often. The live t. iso seems to help keep the water from fouling and the bbs don't seem to choke on it and die as much/often. Also, I can be more relaxed to the amount of time I leave them in the enrichment.

They are looking so big! I love there are light ones on the black mesh. I always use colored mesh, so I never imagined them coloring up on black holdfasts.
