When are you going to get seahorses again?

« posted: 2 years ago »
I have been asked this question several times on the boards and my reply was always, I don't no yet. After 5 years of keeping and breeding seahorses I do know what I need to do to get ready for my new batch of horses, so here is the long answer to the question in the subject line.

When I have throughly cleaned all my filters, tank and all the equipment.

When my water checks out to be a good as I make it and the tank is fully cycled.

When the temperature is stable and I can maintain it for the species of seahorse that I plan to get.

When I rearrange the live rock so that the horses can't become stuck or wedged into any tight spots between the rock or glass.

When I have safe hitches for my horses ( nothing sharp or abrasive) and a feeding station in place.

When I upgrade my lighting for the best viewing of the horses and strong enough to grow macros.

When I get a nice assortment of marcos and finish my aquascaping.

When my medicine cabinet is full and I am ready for any mishaps or first aid.

When my filter intakes have been fixed so that in the event of fry they will not be sucked into the powerhead, skimmer etc.

When I can afford to do all of the above and have enough $$$ to get the best captive bred seahorses from a reliable source.

Then I will be ready.

That is a lot of 'when I'...
Just teasing, that is a very responsible approach and I wish all aquarists would prepare for their pets as thoroughly.  We are stewards of the creatures we keep and we owe it to them to provide a safe enviroment where they can live out fulfilling lives.

Oh left out, when I have all the proper foods for a staple and varied diet.

That's a very responsible mindset, Bruce. Did you come to that point since then btw?
