New Girl!

« posted: 1 year ago »
So I just got a new female erectus from a friend who needed to rehome some of his animals. She's adorable and seems very healthy. In qt for the next few weeks but is eating great and gets very excited for feeding time.

My only concern is that her normal coloration is almost all white so I'm worried I'm going to have a harder time spotting any discoloration that may signal illness/infection. Has anyone had any experience with a very light horse? Are there any signs I should keep an eye out for that would be different from a dark horse?

I'll try to get a picture or two tonight or tomorrow!

Both of my ponies darkened up when they got an infection, a reaction to being stressed so i would watch for that as 1 possible indication.

She is next to impossible to photograph but here are some pictures of her! I've never had one so white. It's really kinda neat (She's been this color since my friend got her. So definitely not stress). Please ignore my incredibly inadequate tank. I wasn't expecting her and this was the only cycled tank I had to use for QT for a few weeks before she goes into my tank with my male.

She seems to be doing really well and has the loudest snick I've ever heard! My friend heard it 10ft away while I was feeding (granted I think she heard the gravel hit the tank from the snick but even so, shes pretty loud).

I'm really hoping she doesn't decide to darken up when she goes in with my super dark male.

He may be dark but he is still lovely! I like the yellow racing stripe on his fin 😀

for right now, yes. It is a lot more time intensive than a sump system to keep up water quality, but it works. I will be upgrading very soon

So I guess my new girl made my male much happier than I realized. Checked in on the tank on Sunday to find babies! I really wasn't expecting fry and have neither the time or means to raise them so I will probably be giving them to a few friends who want to try their had at rearing. I may keep a few to try myself, but I haven't decided yet as I know it is really time intensive. I'm so happy to see the fry as I'm taking this to mean my seahorses are very happy and healthy!  :D

Well, congrats on having happy seahorses and on having fry too.  It is an unique experience raising fry.  Best of luck to ya if you decide to keep some.
