Great write up! I remember a few years ago thinking some P.E. Mysis I bought from a LFS was bad when I inspected it closely at home. It was dark brown and I ended up throwing it out thankfully! Now with my own store I can see how frozen foods can get handled poorly. We put any frozens in the freezer as soon as we get them, but I can see where that could get put on hold with big orders coming in.

I will have to pay more attention to how frozen the foods are when we get them. Some companies definitely have better handling practices than others. Seems like the ones we have shipped to us so far use freeze packs rather than dry ice. I'll have to ask our truck drivers if the cooler they keep the frozen foods in on the truck is kept cold with freeze packs or dry ice.

Thanks for the info Tami!

See! You're exactly the type of fish store I'd love to have in the area! Concerned about the quality of food you have available.

It is really a shame that handling problems are so prevalent, because most manufacturers really do their damned to do everything right, only for it to drop in quality once it gets out of their hands.

My lfs frozen food is always frozen well when it comes into his shop,he has even sent some back because he wasn't happy with the way it came in.It may have something to do with him having marine fish himself,he has always said if he wouldn't give it to his own fish, why should he expect other to feed their fish with it.
